Autonomous Data Operations · ASTRO and Missions

An outcome goes in. A verified result comes out.

ASTRO turns a business outcome into a Mission: a plan, coordinated agents, observed results, corrections, human checkpoints and a verification you can inspect. It runs on the same records, rules and permissions as the rest of the platform.

Step through one Mission. It will stop at the checkpoint until you decide.

Mission M-0417

Outcome

Make 1,860 acquired cutting-tool SKUs ready for the distributor web store

Scope: items from the acquired branch catalog. Destination: web store channel rules. Policies: technical attributes may auto-apply above threshold with a cited source; duplicates and regulated values need a steward.

Anatomy of a Mission

Defined before anything runs

A Mission is a contract between the people who own the data and the agents that work on it.

Outcome
A destination state, such as ready for a channel or deduplicated against the master.
Scope
The records, domains and sources in play, expressed as a query.
Policies
Which governance rules apply and which changes need approval.
Checkpoints
Points where only a named role can let work proceed.
Stop conditions
Thresholds that halt the Mission as unsafe rather than continue.

Autonomy levels

Autonomy is a setting, not a leap of faith

Set per Mission and data domain. Every level keeps human checkpoints for regulated and structural changes.

Execute within policy

Agents apply changes that meet policy and stop at checkpoints.

Typical fit: Normalization, mapping, enrichment with sources

Human checkpoints remain in force at every level.

How it works

The working sequence

  1. Understand

ASTRO reads the requested outcome, the affected records and the policies, permissions and destination requirements that apply.

  2. Plan

It assembles a Mission plan: which agents run, in what order, with which approval checkpoints and stop conditions.

  3. Act and observe

Agents map, classify, enrich, match and validate. Results are observed against rules; failures trigger correction or replanning.

  4. Verify or escalate

The Mission ends verified, waiting on a human decision, or halted as unsafe to proceed — never silently finished.

Autonomy and its boundaries

Throughput from agents. Authority from people.

The point is not that agents work without people. It is that people stop doing the volume work and spend their time on the decisions that policy reserves for them.

Autonomy improves

  • Decompose outcomes into ordered, observable steps
  • Run specialist agents in parallel where safe
  • Detect failures and replan instead of retrying blindly
  • Report verification separately from completion

People hold authority

  • Administrators set autonomy levels per Mission and domain
  • Checkpoints are defined by policy, never by the agent
  • Only authorized people can clear a checkpoint
  • Reviewers can reject, edit or reverse proposed changes

Evidence retained

  • Plan versions and why they changed
  • Every change attributed to agent and Mission
  • Sources for generated or inferred values
  • Verification results and remaining exceptions

Industrial examples

Where this shows up

Industrial distributor, acquisition

SituationAn acquired branch brings an unmapped catalog of fasteners and cutting tools with inconsistent units and supplier part numbers.

How Autonera handles itA Mission maps, normalizes and matches the items to existing records and escalates suspected duplicates for steward decision.

Electrical manufacturer, new line

SituationA new breaker family needs classification, complete technical attributes and channel-ready content before launch.

How Autonera handles itAgents propose classification and attribute values from spec sheets, with sources attached, and hold publishing until approval.

Fluid power distributor, channel launch

SituationHydraulic fittings must meet a new marketplace's attribute requirements before a fixed go-live date.

How Autonera handles itA Mission targets the marketplace rule set, fills gaps from datasheets with sources, and reports exactly which items are verified ready and which wait on people.

Buyer questions

What is a Mission?

A Mission is a governed unit of work defined by an outcome, a scope of records, the policies that apply, an autonomy level and the checkpoints where people must decide. ASTRO plans and coordinates the agents that execute it.

What does ASTRO do that a workflow engine does not?

A workflow runs predefined steps. ASTRO builds the plan from the outcome and context, observes results against rules, and replans when a step fails — while staying inside the same policies and checkpoints.

Can a Mission pass a human approval on its own?

No. Checkpoints defined by policy can only be cleared by an authorized person. If no decision is made, the Mission waits or ends without that work applied.

How is a Mission's result verified?

Completion and verification are reported separately. Verification re-evaluates the outcome against the destination's rules and states which records are ready, which are waiting on people and which remain exceptions.

Can we limit autonomy for certain data?

Autonomy is designed to be configurable per Mission and domain, from proposals only to execution within policy. Exact configuration options are subject to product confirmation.

What happens if an agent makes a wrong change?

Every change is attributed with before and after values and evidence, so reviewers can inspect and reverse it where the operation allows reversal.
