What is Semantic Data?
Definition
Semantic data embeds meaning and context into product information, allowing systems to interpret relationships intelligently. In PIM, it supports enriched understanding through taxonomies, ontologies, and structured metadata. Semantic layers help drive AI-powered classification and automation.
Semantic meaning makes labels, units, and relationships interpretable rather than merely readable. For example, an autonomous product data operation could take a value of 150 with an ambiguous source label, associate the value with rated power and the watt unit, and distinguish it from dimensions or light output.
Semantic Data in an autonomous operation

- Step 2:
Semantic Data
Associate the value with rated power and the watt unit
- Step 3:
Outcome
Distinguish it from dimensions or light output
