What is Data Migration?

Definition

Data migration transfers information between systems or formats while maintaining accuracy and integrity. It includes extraction, transformation, loading, and validation. PIM migrations require careful mapping and cleansing to avoid downstream issues.

Migration needs reconciliation and cutover controls, not merely a successful file transfer. For example, an autonomous product data operation could take product records moving to a new target repository, transform and load them using approved migration mappings, and reconcile identifiers, counts, and key attributes before cutover.
